For me, it comes down to my belief that we should only ban something when it is necessary to maintain a functioning society. I don't think that hate speech meet that criterion. Many may not like it, but our fundamental rights are not subject to the democratic process.

I am pretty ambivalent about this one: on the one hand, religious and racial hate speeches are so abhorent, what good can possibly be done by allowing them and discussing their content? surely that is just condoning the ideas and sending a message that that kind of thinking, that hatred, is valid and SANE. on the other hand, who are we, who is anyone to say what is right, what is GOOD and what is evil? who decides what is sane and what is insane?
i think i'd rather think about zombies, actually.

Most Zombie fiction is film based so there aren't too many zombie books, although'' World War Z'' and Max Brooks' previous novel ''The Zombie Survival Guide'', (which I have not read) are probably a good start. As for movies, I'd suggest starting with [[Night of the Living Dead]], which is Romero's first Zombie film, and probably the "classic" zombie film. The sequels [[Dawn of the Dead]], (which has been remade) and [[Day of the Dead]] are probably worth watching too. In the 80's there were a bunch of crappy Zombie films, and the genre died off a bit. However (as I mentioned in my previous post) there has been a bit of a revival of late, so [[28 Days Later]] is worth watching as more of a modern Zombie film. I'd also suggest [[Shawn of the Dead]], but as it is a parody, you should familiarize yourself with the original material first.

The standard zombie is single mindedly obsessed with eating brains. So very little personality. However, like with most fiction each story is a little different. For example, in [[Zombie Honeymoon]], the character slowly descends into zombie-dom, so there is some character.

Most zombie fiction centers around survival. That is, a small number of survivors trapped somewhere by hordes of Zombies. How do you survive? The zombies themselves don't really plan they just keep coming, they never sleep, they never eat, they don't feel pain, or fear and there is usually lots of them, so you can't just shoot them all. In the end, the need to find supplies requires the survivors venture outside.

When i read your review i realised i really don't know much about zombies. i was thinking "zombies? what's to like?". can anyone reccommend a "good" zombie book? i mean, do zombies even have personalities? what would a zombie book even be about when all i thought they did was wander around, zombie-like, making people into more zombies? zombies zombies zombies. it's a good word.

It is definitely true that zombies can't really be sexy-ed up like vampires, however Zombies are better for comedy, like [[Fido]] and [[Shawn of the Dead]].

i like your comment about zombies being the new vampires. but its a strange thing, i think. you can sexy vampires up, we saw it in all those movies - but zombies?! they are not sexy. that is why it is so weird that we have embraced them (so to speak). maybe we have developed more of a sense of humour about the undead.
