28 Weeks Later

One line review: Frustrating

I like 28 Days Later. It is not perfect, but I like it anyway. It was original, and is partially responsible the Zombie resurgence. So I had reasonable expectations for 28 Weeks Later. These were somewhat tempered by the knowledge that most of the talent involved in 28 Days Later was not involved in 28 Weeks Later.

28 Weeks Later manages to keep the style and tension of the original film, however there are a few flaws in the story that I found frustrating. These flaws don't ruin the film for me, but they were enough to keep me from really enjoying the film.

The basic story line is that 28 weeks after the Rage virus outbreak, people are being re-introduced into London. Unfortunately, the virus make a reappearance and so the main characters must survive.

The issues I have the story are mostly awkward plot devices. Some of the characters made unlikely choices which are clearly used to drive the action in particular directions. I don't want to spoil this too much, so I have written another page that includes spoilers.

The only part of the film making that really bothered me was the over use of hyper-editing. The first film had some of this as well, however it used it better. In particular in 28 Weeks Later the hyper-editing often lasted too long. I find that if there are more that a few seconds of the fast cuts, then I get annoyed by it. A single longer cut can be used to reorient the viewer before plunging back into the hyper-editing. Besides that, I felt that the visuals worked fairly well, have the same gritty, grainy look as the original film.

In the end I liked 28 Weeks Later a little less that 28 Days Later, however it you liked the first film or Zombie/Survival horror in general you'll probably enjoy this film as well.
