Beerfest
One line review: Another great Broken Lizard comedy
Super Troopers was my first introduction to the comedy of Broken Lizard. Their style is some sort of frat house humour mashed up with very clever situational humour. Alcohol, drugs and sex make up a significant portion of the humour, with a good dose of taboo busting some how mixed with just the right kind of intellegence to keep it from ever being offensive (not offensive in a racial, homophobic or sexist kind of way). Much of the humour is probably quite offensive to some people, but not to me, or my girlfriend, or the friends that I saw this movie with.
The best thing I can say is that we all laughed a lot.
As will all of the Broken Lizard films, much of the humour is based on situations, some of the situations work better that others. Most of the situations in Beerfest are awesome, without given anything away, the labratory scene, the visit to grandma's house and Barry night of passion, to name a few. However, there were also some scenes that did not really work as well, the opening funeral scene, for example. Of course, the good stuff is hilarious, and the lesser stuff is "only" good, which is miles above most comedies.
One must also give credit to the performances, these guys know how to perform comedy. In particular, Steve Lemme who is the chameleon of the group. In each of the Broken Lizard films he adopts a very different persona an manages to pull it off.
Compared to the other Broken Lizard films: better than Club Dread, but still not quite a good as Super Troopers.
