English Title: The Host
One word review: Fishy
The Host is a Korean monster movie. The basic story is that a huge mutated fish is living in a river that runs through a city. This mutant starts coming out of the river to feed on the local inhabitants. The youngest daughter of a family is taken by the monster and the family seeks revenge. The movie is kind of interesting, it is not always serious, nor is it always comedic, although there are definitely scenes that are both.
I don't want to say too much as I might spoil parts of the film. I like this move quite a bit. It been a long time since a saw a monster movie in the theatre, and even longer since I've seen one that I liked.
The film is not perfect. Occasionally it slips beyond simply silly into the realm of absurd. However it is not too often, and it may just be something getting lost in the translation. As well, there are a few times that the character make very odd decisions.
The monster C.G. is mostly good, but every now and again it looks a bit plastic.
In the end, if you like monster movies, even just a little bit, then The Host is worth seeing.
