One word review: Slow

If you've seen Ghost in the Shell, you probably remember the scenes of Motoko traveling around New Tokyo. The dark moody music and the long shots of city scenery. In small doses, it gave the viewer time to really appreciate the animation and get into the mood. Imagine a film that is almost entirely composed of those types of shots, only not animated. What you get is something similar to Invisible Waves. The description of the film made it sound pretty action packed, with Yakuza and hitmen and revenge. Although all those things do exist, they are sparsely places throughout, with long, boring shots separating them.

A suppose a comparison to Hani-bi (Fireworks) could be made, but in Hani-bi, the quiet hero is actually interesting to watch, the possibility of explosive violence creating a sort of tension. That make the slow transition scenes engaging.

If I want to watch a Thai film, I'd prefer anything by Tony Jaa and Hani-bi does the whole quiet hero thing better.
