I spend most of 1996 at the University of Melbourne (on an exchange program). While there I really discovered the internet for the first time. A friend was running a website and had a section for people to submit poetry. In particular, bad poetry. Being a bad poet I decided to submit something. I did not have any good ideas, but I did have a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary. Being a random kind of guy I decided to open the dictionary, find an interesting word and use that as the basis of my poem.
So I opened the dictionary and started scanning for different and unusual words. Thus I discovered floccinaucinihilipilification. Unfortunately my friend's website did not last too long and my attempt at poetry was lost with it. The only thing I remember some something about floccinaucinihilipilification having 8 i's (eyes) and so it would be an ugly monster.
Once I moved back to Vancouver (where I am originally from) I decided to set up a website of my own. Floccinaucinihilipilification is such a weird and wonderful word, I decided to use it. Plus the original incarnation of my website was a bunch of weird and crazy things that I wrote, plus links to other equally weird and crazy things. I would not have been hard for someone to floccinaucinihilipilificate the page. A few years later, when I started earning some money, (and after my website got kicked of the university servers, when I graduated) I decided to buy my own little piece of the internet. So I registered floccinaucinihilipilification.net.
